Encouraging Seniors to Stay Active & Involved During the Winter

January 1, 2024

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Encourages Seniors to Stay Active and Involved During the Winter Months

As winter sets in and temperatures drop, Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of seniors in our community. Embracing an active and engaged lifestyle is crucial, especially during the colder months when outdoor activities may be limited. To this end, we are excited to share a variety of suggestions for seniors to stay active, involved, and connected during the winter season.

  1. Try Something New: Embrace the spirit of adventure by trying a new hobby. Whether it’s painting, crafting, or learning a new language, discovering a passion can bring joy and fulfillment.
  2. Access Community Centers: Many community centers offer a range of activities and programs tailored for seniors. Attend social events, classes, or workshops to connect with others in the community. The Grafton County Senior Citizens Council operates 8 centers in our area. (gcscc.org)
  3. Go Swimming: If you have access to an indoor pool, exercising in the warm water is an excellent low-impact exercise that provides both physical and mental health benefits. Mid-State Health Center, The White Mountain Athletic Club and Plymouth State University are all great options.
  4. Use Fitness Videos/YouTube: Stay active in the comfort of your home by following fitness videos or online workout routines. Many platforms, including YouTube, offer a variety of exercises suitable for all fitness levels and it’s free.
  5. Start or Join a Book Club: Engage your mind by reading and discussing books with a local book club or start one with friends. It’s a great way to connect with others and share ideas.
  6. Join or Create a League: Whether it’s a bowling league, a card game group, or a chess club, participating in a league fosters social interaction and friendly competition.
  7. Delve into Genealogy Research: Explore your family history and heritage by delving into genealogy research. Uncover fascinating stories about your ancestors and connect with your roots.
  8. Grow Something in an Indoor Garden: Cultivate a love for gardening by starting an indoor garden. Planting herbs, flowers, or small vegetables can be a rewarding and therapeutic activity.
  9. Just Move Around the House: Simple activities like walking around the house, climbing stairs, stretching, or practicing yoga can contribute to maintaining mobility and flexibility.Learning to play guitar
  10. Learn to Play a Musical Instrument: Rediscover the joy of music by learning to play an instrument. Many online resources offer tutorials for beginners. (udemy.com or www.masterclass.com)
  11. Beat Your Peers at Board Games: Organize game nights with friends or family. Board games and card games are not only entertaining but also provide an opportunity for socializing and friendly competition.
  12. Travel Without Leaving Home: Explore the world from the comfort of your home by watching travel documentaries, reading travel books, or virtually touring destinations online.

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is committed to supporting seniors in leading fulfilling lives, and we encourage individuals to explore these diverse activities to stay active, engaged, and connected throughout the winter season. Happy New Year!

Holiday Blues Grief & Loss Support Group November 21st, 2023

November 1, 2023

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Starting Free Holiday Blues Grief & Loss Support Group November 21, 2023

Here in the United States, it seems like “the holidays” are now starting at Halloween. But as Thanksgiving approaches, the black cats, witches, ghosts, gravestones, and skeletons have to exit to make room for the turkeys, even though the pumpkins, gourds, and autumn leaves remain. But look! Behind them are the tree decorations, wreaths, ornaments, lights, snowmen, and wrapping paper!

The colors, sparkle, and glitz of the holidays, however, can leave persons unfazed who have endured losses of any kind. Someone will be missing from the Thanksgiving table this year. ‘Remember how Dad used to lose it and swear when hanging the lights outside?’ ‘We just moved here from Oregon in August and we don’t really know anyone yet.’ ‘Who’s going to make the potato latkes for Hanukkah now that Bubbe is gone?’ ‘I got laid off three weeks ago and haven’t been able to find work.’ ‘We had to put Princess down- she was so sick.’ ‘What’s New Year’s going to be like without Uncle Jack to snowmobile with or to watch the games on TV?’ The season of celebration and merriment can be an emotionally difficult time for those unsettled and disturbed by bereavement.

As in previous years, Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health will be offering its “HOLIDAY BLUES Grief and Loss Support Group” for those in need of processing various losses and in need of support in the company of others.

The group will begin on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 and will go for six sessions, concluding on Tuesday, December 26, 2023. The group meets at 10:30am in the upstairs art room (accessible by elevator) at the Plymouth Senior Center. The group process will include such handouts as “A Holiday Grievers Bill of Rights” to stimulate conversation and sharing as well as ideas for simple rituals that can be taken home. We strive toward providing an emotionally safe space where persons can find understanding and strength.

Persons who wish to participate must pre-register by contacting Guy Tillson, Hospice Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator by email at gtillson@pbhha.org or by phone at (603) 536-2232.  Please contact him BEFORE Wednesday, November 15, 2023, so we have an idea of how many to prepare for.

FREE Advance Directive Workshops in April

March 31, 2023

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Empowers Individuals to Make Informed Healthcare Decision by Offering FREE Workshops at Local Senior Centers in April

National Healthcare Decision Day is an annual event that takes place on April 16th to encourage individuals to make decisions about their healthcare in advance of a medical crisis. This day aims to empower patients to make informed decisions about their care, reduce confusion and stress for families, and ultimately improve the quality of healthcare for everyone.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of making healthcare decisions in advance. Many people have had to make critical decisions about their health and the health of their loved ones in a matter of minutes or hours. The stress and confusion of these situations can be overwhelming, making it difficult to make informed decisions that align with an individual’s values and wishes. Advance Care Planning at Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, Plymouth, NH

National Healthcare Decision Day provides an opportunity for individuals to take control of their healthcare decisions before a medical crisis occurs. This day reminds us all of the importance of discussing our healthcare wishes with our loved ones, healthcare providers, and designated agents. This open dialogue can help ensure that our healthcare choices are respected and followed in the event we cannot speak for ourselves.

The theme for this year’s National Healthcare Decision Day is “Planning for your Future: It’s Always Too Early Until It’s Too Late.” We urge everyone to take the time to consider their health care wishes and make plans for the future. This can involve completing an advance directive, naming a healthcare agent, and discussing these decisions with family and loved ones.

Pemi-Baker is offering three Advance Directive workshops during the month of April, collaborating with the Grafton Senior Citizens Council:

  • April 5th, 10-11:00am: Orford Senior Center (603-353-9107)
  • April 12th, 10:30-11:30am: Lin-Wood Area Senior Services (603-745-7446)
  • April 19th, 10:30-11:30am: Plymouth Regional Senior Center (603-536-1204)

These group workshops are free. Our Pemi-Baker social worker will be a neutral guide helping you reflect on and identify the values, beliefs and goals that shape the way you make health care decisions. Advance Directive forms will be available for use and we ask that you pre-register by phone, before the event, using phone numbers listed above.

For more information on Advance Directive Forms please visit our website: www.pbhha.org

Winter Grief Support Group Series

January 12, 2023

Offered by Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health and Plymouth Regional Senior Center.

Grief is the complex of feelings one experiences after loss- any kind of loss.  Though we usually associate the idea of grief with the death of someone we have known and loved, grief is also experienced following termination of employment, destruction of one’s home after fire or natural disaster, divorce or the breakup of a relationship, relocation to an unfamiliar place where you know no one, loss of one’s finances through bad investments or crime, or the death of a pet.  Many people choose to brush off grief or ignore it, but it really does not go away on its own.  It can be helpful to be in the company of others who are also coming to terms with their grief.

PEMI-BAKER HOSPICE AND HOME HEALTH offers grief support groups at various times throughout the calendar year to assist persons in our area who would like help and companionship in processing their losses.

GRIEF 101: The Basics

The next group, “GRIEF 101:  The Basics”, will begin on Tuesday, February 14, 2023.  There will be an in-person morning session at 11:00am, held in the Exercise Room at the Plymouth Area Regional Senior Center.  There will be a late afternoon session, accessible virtually only, beginning at 5:30pm.  Virtual participation is also possible for the morning session.  ALL virtual participants will need to download the app for TEAMS (It’s like ZOOM) on their devices.  There is no cost to attend either session.

Each group will go for six weeks, ending on March 21, 2023.  The group meetings will include presentations by the facilitator, worksheets, and sharing and discussion on such topics as:

  • “Types of Grief”
  • “What Is Grief Work?”
  • “Principles of Transformation”
  • “What About Me?”

You must pre-register by Wednesday, February 7, 2023, in order to attend so that we know how many to prepare for.  The groups will be facilitated by Guy Tillson, Pemi-Baker’s Bereavement Coordinator.  You may contact him by email: gtillson@pbhha.org  or by leaving a message by phone at (603) 536-2232.

The Rewards of Being a Hospice Volunteer

While I was familiar with Hospice for many years, I only have been a hospice volunteer with Pemi Baker Hospice and Home Health (PBHHH) since October 2021.  When I retired, I began searching for volunteer work that would allow me to give back to my community.  A newsletter from PBHHH arrived in my email announcing training for hospice volunteers.  My family had experienced the need for hospice twice, once in Ohio and again in Florida.  The relief my family and I felt when the hospice volunteers arrived was beyond measure.  I want to bring the same kind of assistance to others.  PBHHH given me that opportunity by providing professional training with knowledgeable nurses, doctors, social workers and other health care professionals.  Their guidance has enabled me to meet the challenges of being s hospice volunteer, and I am very glad that I did it.

You give of yourselves day & night without end!

To the Pemi-Baker Hospice Team--Words really can't express my feelings-

Your help during one of the most difficult times of my life is SO appreciated.  I'm so grateful that because of you, Doug was able to get his wish not to spend the last of his days in a hospital, but at home with those of us who loved him.

And to be constantly reassured that if I needed anything you would be there-oh my gosh-ANYTIME!  Well, you people need to know how much you are appreciated.  You give of yourselves day & night without end!  God Bless you and thank you!

“Pemi-Baker Hospice services provided kind, professional, competent services every step of the way-and even vaccinated us all for Covid/19!””

Our primary nurse, Fred, was outstanding, and others who filled in (Cathy, Penny, Colleen) were wonderful and a credit to your organization. Fred, you were amazing, not only for mom but for my husband and I as well. I will forever be grateful for your support, wisdom, humor and kindness, all along the end of life journey for mom. I am so deeply thankful that circumstances conspired such that mom was able to die at home, and your role made that time as seamless as it could be made.
