Grief & Bereavement Support Group: ‘Keeping On, Keeping On’

March 6, 2025

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Offers Grief & Bereavement Support Group: “Keeping On Keeping On.”Free Grief & Loss Support groups offered at Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, Plymouth, NH

Grief is a journey with no “Fast Forward” button, as one television character recently reminded another who was mourning a dear friend. The experience of loss is deeply personal, marked by emotional highs and lows, and each individual’s path through bereavement is unique. The phrase “Keeping on keeping on” captures this ongoing movement through grief — and finding support along the way can make a meaningful difference.
To help members of the community navigate this difficult terrain, Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is sponsoring a Grief & Bereavement Support Group, starting Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 10:30 AM. Meetings will be held in the upstairs art room at the Plymouth Area Regional Senior Center, now fully accessible via elevator. New participants are encouraged to arrive by 10:15 AM to obtain a parking slip from the front desk receptionist.
This free support group offers a compassionate space for individuals to share, reflect, and find comfort among others who understand the complexity of grief. The group will also explore the value of self-care during especially difficult emotional times. Attendees are asked to join the first session on March 18 and to arrive on time to help foster a supportive group dynamic.
Interested persons should pre-register by contacting Guy Tillson, Hospice Spiritual Counselor and Bereavement Coordinator, at gtillson@pbhha.org or by calling 603-536-2232.

PBH&HH Urging Vigilance Amid Rising Seasonal Infections

February 11, 2025

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Urges Vigilance for Those with COPD, Heart Failure, and Diabetes Amid Rising Seasonal Infections.

As seasonal infections surge across New Hampshire, Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is urging residents, particularly those with chronic conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Heart Failure, and Diabetes, to take extra precautions to safeguard their health.Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health treating respiratory infections, Plymouth, NH

The winter season often brings a spike in respiratory illnesses, influenza, and other viral infections. This year, healthcare providers are witnessing an even higher rate of seasonal infections, posing significant risks to vulnerable populations.

“Individuals with chronic conditions are at a heightened risk of complications from common seasonal infections,” said Dr. Kristi Saunders, Hospice Medical Director at Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health. “For patients with COPD, Heart Failure, or Diabetes, even a mild infection can lead to severe health deterioration, hospitalization, or worse.”

Key Health Tips for Staying Safe:

  1. Stay Up-to-Date on Vaccinations: Ensure vaccinations for influenza, COVID-19, and pneumonia are current. These vaccines significantly reduce the risk of severe illness.
  2. Practice Good Hygiene: Frequent handwashing, using hand sanitizer, and avoiding touching your face can prevent the spread of germs.
  3. Wear Masks in Crowded Areas: Wearing masks in public spaces, especially indoors, reduces exposure to airborne viruses.
  4. Monitor Your Health Closely: Keep track of your symptoms. Any sudden changes in breathing, heart rate, blood sugar levels, or overall health should prompt immediate medical attention.
  5. Manage Chronic Conditions Effectively: Adhere strictly to prescribed treatment plans, take medications as directed, and maintain regular check-ins with healthcare providers.
  6. Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Proper nutrition and hydration strengthen the immune system.

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health offers specialized support to help manage chronic conditions and provides guidance on infection prevention. Their team of skilled nurses, therapists, and health aides is dedicated to helping patients maintain their independence and health in the comfort of their homes.

Recognizing Early Warning Signs:

People with COPD, Heart Failure, or Diabetes should be vigilant for symptoms such as:

  • Increased shortness of breath
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • High or persistent fever
  • Unusual fatigue or weakness
  • Changes in blood sugar levels
  • Swelling in the legs or abdomen

“Prompt medical attention can make a critical difference,” added Saunders. “If you or a loved one experiences these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.”

Don’t wait to ask about how our compassionate staff can help your loved ones. To qualify for home health care, a person must have a physician’s order and demonstrate a need for skilled care that can be safely provided at home. Our focus is on providing comfort to patients and support to families, with our team available 24/7 to address any concerns. The call is free, and our professionals are ready to assist you! September is Sepsis Awareness Month

August 30, 2024

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Urges Awareness During Sepsis Awareness Month.

September is Sepsis Awareness Month, a critical time to raise awareness about a condition that claims the lives of over 350,000 adults in the U.S. every year—more than opioid overdoses, breast cancer, and prostate cancer combined. Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is committed to educating our community on the dangers of sepsis and the importance of early detection and prevention.

Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection and is a life-threatening medical emergency. If not treated promptly, sepsis can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. It is the number one cause of hospital readmissions in the U.S., costing the healthcare system more than $3.5 billion annually.

To help identify sepsis early, it’s essential to know the signs and symptoms using the acronym TIME: Sepsis Awareness Month Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health and Sepsis Alliance

  • Temperature: Higher or lower than normal.
  • Infection: Signs and symptoms of an infection.
  • Mental Decline: Confusion, sleepiness, difficult to rouse.
  • Extremely Ill: Severe pain or discomfort, shortness of breath.

Home Health Care Reduces the Risk of Sepsis

Early intervention is key to preventing sepsis from escalating. That’s why having our skilled home health nurses and aides in your home right after surgery can significantly reduce your risk of developing sepsis. At Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, we provide personalized care designed to promote healing and prevent complications, ensuring our patients have the best possible outcomes.

Our commitment to excellence in patient care has been recognized nationally. Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is proud to announce that we have been awarded the 2024 IPRO Quality Award for our outstanding achievements in reducing emergency department visits and improving transitions of care for our patients. This prestigious award underscores our dedication to enhancing the quality of care we provide to our community.

As we observe Sepsis Awareness Month, we encourage everyone to educate themselves about the dangers of sepsis and take proactive steps to protect themselves and their loved ones. Holiday Blues Grief & Loss Support Group November 21st, 2023

November 1, 2023

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Starting Free Holiday Blues Grief & Loss Support Group November 21, 2023

Here in the United States, it seems like “the holidays” are now starting at Halloween. But as Thanksgiving approaches, the black cats, witches, ghosts, gravestones, and skeletons have to exit to make room for the turkeys, even though the pumpkins, gourds, and autumn leaves remain. But look! Behind them are the tree decorations, wreaths, ornaments, lights, snowmen, and wrapping paper!

The colors, sparkle, and glitz of the holidays, however, can leave persons unfazed who have endured losses of any kind. Someone will be missing from the Thanksgiving table this year. ‘Remember how Dad used to lose it and swear when hanging the lights outside?’ ‘We just moved here from Oregon in August and we don’t really know anyone yet.’ ‘Who’s going to make the potato latkes for Hanukkah now that Bubbe is gone?’ ‘I got laid off three weeks ago and haven’t been able to find work.’ ‘We had to put Princess down- she was so sick.’ ‘What’s New Year’s going to be like without Uncle Jack to snowmobile with or to watch the games on TV?’ The season of celebration and merriment can be an emotionally difficult time for those unsettled and disturbed by bereavement.

As in previous years, Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health will be offering its “HOLIDAY BLUES Grief and Loss Support Group” for those in need of processing various losses and in need of support in the company of others.

The group will begin on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 and will go for six sessions, concluding on Tuesday, December 26, 2023. The group meets at 10:30am in the upstairs art room (accessible by elevator) at the Plymouth Senior Center. The group process will include such handouts as “A Holiday Grievers Bill of Rights” to stimulate conversation and sharing as well as ideas for simple rituals that can be taken home. We strive toward providing an emotionally safe space where persons can find understanding and strength.

Persons who wish to participate must pre-register by contacting Guy Tillson, Hospice Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator by email at gtillson@pbhha.org or by phone at (603) 536-2232.  Please contact him BEFORE Wednesday, November 15, 2023, so we have an idea of how many to prepare for.

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health Presents: ‘Caregiver, a Love Story’ Film Showing and Q&A Discussion

Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health is thrilled to invite the community to a special film showing of ‘Caregiver, a Love Story’ followed by a thought-provoking question and answer session with a panel consisting of a Hospice Registered Nurse, Hospice Medical Director, Spiritual Care Counselor, and Social Work professionals. This event is open to the public and will take place on Wednesday, November 15th, from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM at the Boulder Point Community Room of Speare Primary Care at Health Place, located at 103 Boulder Point Drive, Plymouth, NH. Caregiver a love story showing and question and answer discussion with Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, Plymouth, NH

‘Caregiver, a Love Story’ is a poignant 25-minute documentary that delves into the life of a 59-year-old woman named Bambi and her devoted husband, who becomes her primary caregiver after Bambi chooses to discontinue further cancer treatments. The film provides an intimate and heartfelt look at the challenges and moments of tenderness that Bambi and her husband experience as they confront the reality of her impending mortality.

Susan Varnum, Pemi-Baker’s Home Care, Palliative Care & Hospice Director, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “This film gives us a realistic glimpse inside what home hospice looks like and can initiate discussions we have now with ourselves and others about what matters most to us if we were in Bambi or her husband’s shoes. Our expert panel, which includes our Hospice Medical Director, will be available to answer questions related to hospice care and what matters most to you.”

The film screening and question and answer (Q&A) session are open to anyone interested in learning more about the invaluable services offered by hospice care providers and the profound impact it can have on the lives of patients and their loved ones. It’s an opportunity to gain insight into the challenges, emotions, and ultimately the love that often defines the caregiving journey.

Attendees are encouraged to ask questions, share their own experiences, and engage in meaningful conversations about the importance of end-of-life care and the choices individuals make during such critical moments in their lives.

Hospice care is a compassionate approach to end-of-life care that focuses on enhancing the quality of life for individuals facing terminal illnesses. Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health has been a trusted provider of hospice and home health services in the area, since 1967; dedicated to providing exceptional care and support to patients and their families during difficult times.

The Rewards of Being a Hospice Volunteer

While I was familiar with Hospice for many years, I only have been a hospice volunteer with Pemi Baker Hospice and Home Health (PBHHH) since October 2021.  When I retired, I began searching for volunteer work that would allow me to give back to my community.  A newsletter from PBHHH arrived in my email announcing training for hospice volunteers.  My family had experienced the need for hospice twice, once in Ohio and again in Florida.  The relief my family and I felt when the hospice volunteers arrived was beyond measure.  I want to bring the same kind of assistance to others.  PBHHH given me that opportunity by providing professional training with knowledgeable nurses, doctors, social workers and other health care professionals.  Their guidance has enabled me to meet the challenges of being s hospice volunteer, and I am very glad that I did it.

“Pemi-Baker Hospice services provided kind, professional, competent services every step of the way-and even vaccinated us all for Covid/19!””

Our primary nurse, Fred, was outstanding, and others who filled in (Cathy, Penny, Colleen) were wonderful and a credit to your organization. Fred, you were amazing, not only for mom but for my husband and I as well. I will forever be grateful for your support, wisdom, humor and kindness, all along the end of life journey for mom. I am so deeply thankful that circumstances conspired such that mom was able to die at home, and your role made that time as seamless as it could be made.

Your courage during Covid-19 does not go unnoticed

Hello. We just wanted to take a moment and let you know how much we truly appreciate all that you do for us in these trying times. You're commitment to the health of our community is a special thing, and we know that you are working under stressful conditions due to the Covid 19 crisis. We realize that in order for you to treat those who may be ill, you are putting you're own lives and even you're own families lives in danger, and that is truly a courageous and honorable thing to do. We want you to know that it does not go unnoticed. Thank you all for all that you do!
